Northern Irish: New faces in management - NI's qualifications campaign
The Northern Irish's campaign for World Cup qualification, which saw them finish third and clinch a play-off spot, reflected changes in management and player development.

Northern Ireland's campaign for World Cup group qualification has generated a lot of debate and achieved a key goal - to keep the World Cup dream alive. NI finished third in Group B2 with two wins and four losses, securing a World Cup playoff and B status in the next Nations League. With changes in management and the arrival of several senior players, this has been a campaign of growth and change for the Northern Irish. But is there a chance it will finally be considered a good one?
Changes in management bring new confidence
In November, just weeks after being drafted into eligibility, Australian Tanya Oxtoby left her managerial role to join WSL side Newcastle United. With no clear successor, it looked like the campaign would be forgotten before it even began. Kris Lindsay was appointed as interim manager in January after narrow defeats against Switzerland and Turkey. But then Michael McGard was announced as the permanent manager. Before his appointment, the Scotsman was largely unknown, but in three months he has made a significant impact.
Lurgan as new home
Northern Ireland have played all their World Cup qualifiers at Mourneview Park and are on the hunt for a permanent home. Last June 2024, they played in Lurgan, losing 2-1 against Portugal. NI had 1 win and 2 losses, but in the defeats against Switzerland and Turkey, they did well in holding back their opponents.

Mistakes continue to affect
The Northern Irish should be thinking about a number of goals that can be avoided this campaign. They will have to play against opponents like Switzerland in the upcoming playoff period, and Michael McGardle will be challenged to minimize mistakes before the playoff success.
Freshmen Immediate Impact
Emilie Gastab made her debut in the green shirt, scoring a goal 66 seconds into the match against Switzerland. Cora Chambers earned three senior caps, and Fi Morgan and Amy Kerr made their debuts. All of them showed good performance.
Facing the Future
The Northern Irish are still hopeful of a place in the Brazil play-offs if they win their place in the World Cup play-offs.
