Authority: Dino Toppmöller as RC Lens new head coach; Appointed after the resignation of Pierre Sage
RC Lens has appointed Dino Topmöller as head coach following Pierre Saag's move to Crystal Palace. For Lens, who return to the UEFA Champions League with Ligue 1 runners-up, Topmöller is a notable puzzle piece with European experience.
French Ligue 1 club RC Lens have officially announced German tactician Dino Toppmöller as their new head coach following the departure of head coach Pierre Sauge. Topmöller, the former Eintracht Frankfurt manager, has signed an X-year deal with Lens.
Pierre Sage led Lens to second place in Ligue 1 last season and also won the Coupe de France trophy at the end of May. But with doubts over his future after that win, he caught the attention of Crystal Palace, who were looking for a new coach after the departure of Oliver Klausner. Sag's move to Selhurst Park was confirmed on Monday.
In anticipation of Saaj's exit, Lens management had prepared a list of alternatives. Former FC Lorient coach Olivier Pantaloni also featured. However, they decided to choose Dino Topmöller, who is fluent in several languages and has coaching experience in the European arena.
That experience will be crucial for Lens next season. After finishing second in Ligue 1, RC Lens will participate in the UEFA Champions League next season. Topmöller's team plan and quick training approach, proven at European level competitions, is expected to support Lens' next step.
