FIFA World Cup 2026: South Africa coach Ugo Bruce's expectations ahead of 1/16 final against Canada

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 1/16 Round (Round of 32) match against Canada, South Africa national team head coach Ugo Bruce revealed his expectations and the team's path.
Today, 28th June, the clash is taking place at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, USA. The match starts at 10:00 PM Moscow time. In an interview with the official FIFA website, Ugo Bruce recalled the changes in the team over the past five years.
"It was very difficult in the beginning. Many people made fun of the South African team. We took players from lesser-known clubs and formed the team; it took some time to understand. It was only when we got the bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations in Gothwall two years ago that many people believed. Qualifying for the World Cup was already a success for us. Everyone expected the next step; we got it. But we are not satisfied with this. Once here, we want more — the desire to win this tournament," said Bruce.

He mentioned that if they show the same attitude and quality of play that they showed against South Korea today, there is a chance of winning and Canada is a strong team but they can handle it. "It would be a real miracle for South Africa to make it to the next round," Bruce reiterated.
At the end of the group stage, South Africa finished second in Group 'A' with 4 points. Likewise, Canada finished second in Group 'B' with 4 points.
Memorable: Reigning world champions Argentina. The 2022 final ended 3–3 in regulation time against France, with Argentina winning on penalty kicks.
