Coventry City regained history in the Premier League by recording a home win after a quarter of a century in front of their supporters. The Sky Blues beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the CBS Arena to climb out of the relegation zone and move up to 14th. Notably, the team is level on points with Manchester United after six matches.
Coventry scored early pressure in this game. First Jack Rudoni converted a penalty chance to open the scoring. Then, 19-year-old talent Sidiki Cherif, who arrived from Benerbasher in the summer, scored his first Premier League goal with precision from outside the box. Aged 19 years and 301 days, Sheriff became Coventry's youngest Premier League goalscorer since Robbie Keane's feat in April 2000. It was also Coventry's first Premier League goal from outside the box since David Thompson scored against Newcastle in January 2001.
Elise Sims and Stephen Mpuni added a goal each in the closing stages to make it 4-1. It was the first time Coventry had scored four goals in a Premier League game since a 4–1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in May 2000. The result cemented the Sky Blues' recent win over Nottingham Forest in the league. At the same time, it was a tough 4-1 away defeat for Newcastle in a row.
Coventry have not shown the quality expected at their home ground at the start of this season. A 0-1 loss to relegation-sharers Hull City followed by a heavy 0-5 defeat at Brighton; A 1-3 loss to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup in the middle—against this backdrop, making the CBS Arena a fortress again was a necessary imperative. This victory was a sure sign in that direction.
Frank Lampard's squad has many with little or no Premier League experience—the likes of Jack Rudoni, Brandon Thomas Assante, Efron Mason-Clarke and others who are slowly adapting to the top flight. The coach's insistence is simple: maintain confidence and at the same time avoid overconfidence and play to the limit in every 'picture'. The result against Newcastle was yet another reminder that the intensity that saw them score 97 goals in the Championship last season is still alive and well in this team today.
Crucially, with leading striker Haji Wright sidelined with a hamstring injury, the club's biggest investment, valued at around £20million, has seen an increased goal weight on the shoulders of Sheriff. The biggest positive signal for Coventry is that this young player with European competition experience is starting to show his quality in time.
The next seven games are seen as a phase where this momentum can be confirmed. Next up are winless Tottenham, followed by Fulham who are in the same position; After that Sunderland, Everton, Crystal Palace, Leeds, Ipswich 'pictures' lead the team to the beginning of December. The training center at Ryton is confident that Coventry can build a lasting platform if they remain competitive this term.
All in all, this dramatic but composed win against Newcastle was a strong sign that Coventry City are back in the top flight. With the home rule that fans have come to expect and Lampard's control, this season is likely to be a turning point for the Sky Blues.
What happens next
Coventry next face Tottenham and Fulham, both without a win. Winning these games will give the team a chance to progress further and lay the foundations for a future Premier League presence.
