Musical Times continued its unbeaten run, winning at the bet365 Phillies Mile, a first Group One victory over many obstacles. Charlie Appleby's youngsters had excellent wins in their first two matches in July at Corsley and Yarmham. He had another win in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster last month. 1000 Guineas winner Desert Flower, winner of the May Hill-Fills Mile Double two years ago, was partnered for 4/9 this time, based on Appleby and William Buick. William Buick struggled to gain ground, but once he did, he quickly showed his pace, successfully beating Aidan O'Brien's Haven by a length. Appleby said: "I'm happy, after two flashes, we had to catch our breath a little bit, but William chose the best kid in this competition and he knows it. He tried to get those places, and when he got them, he went up fast.
"Others are trying to hit the same target - ours, but for him and William, they fought and when he got those places, he did what it took.
"When he finally got around to second place, he had to hit the hill well and that's what we saw, he always had a strong leg.
"He worked a little harder, but he learned a lot and today he putts really well.
"That fillies division is strong this year, and there are beautiful fillies, but they're all like sprinting fillies, but this girl looks the mile well.
"He's looking towards the mile this time, and he likes the easy ground, and it's good when he sees the dip.
"But when he goes down, he can't see it, and you can see that curve action, and it's not like it was at Doncaster, where you can't see the dip.
"But it's such a great activity, you can understate it.
"Musical Times has moved from 5/2 to 4/1 on BOYLE Sports for next year's 1000 Guineas, and Appleby will always take the racecourse gallop to contest his regular Craven meeting.
"He was kind of in need of him today, but as we've seen, he needs to be a key partner for Guinness.
"He's worked on this at Miles, and sees it well.
"Now, I would say he's a miler, and he's very naturally fast and quick.
"He might as well go next, and you don't always look like a mile and a chapter, when you're at Epsom, you're a miler, and you've got a mile and a volley, you can work.
"But Appleby has some doubts about the Friendship Center of the Musical Times, but Ophir is confident that Haven will do well in the Friendship Center next season.
"She's still a kid, improving very nicely, so I'm happy with her performance.
"We always thought he was a beautiful kid and he will be beautiful next season.
"She is improving, and the other child is a great matured child, so we are very happy.
"She's an Oaks filly, a mile and a walleye and a mile and a half.
"She's a middle distance child."
