The Uruguayan national team was jettisoned because they did not have flight documents for their flight to Miami, delaying their World Cup preparations.
Major confusion has arisen over entry issues in the World Cup. Less than 24 hours before their opening match, the Uruguayan national team faced a major hurdle in training. Their flight from Cancun to Miami was not cleared due to lack of documents and therefore, FIFA allegedly failed to arrange the necessary clearances in time. This delayed Uruguay's World Cup milestone. A representative of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) said: "Departure from Mexico has been delayed due to issues beyond the control of the AUF." Within hours, the AUF worked frantically to arrange a replacement flight. Meanwhile, FIFA clarified to ESPN that there was a problem with the airline: "The airline apologizes for the inconvenience caused. During the delay, FIFA has been in frequent contact with the Uruguayan national team." Together with the airport and other collaborators, they tried to solve the problem as soon as possible. For Marcelo Bielsa's side, these conditions are not conducive to a World Cup opener. A scheduled media meeting with coach and captain José María Giménez was cancelled. But Bielsa said these situations are "not without problems." Eventually, a flight was arranged, but with major delays. Jimenez, like his coach, didn't see it that way: "We had some problems, it was serious. But the team overcame it and recovered in the hotel.
