Lazio Women's have been ordered to pay €69,000 in damages to their former player Maja Gothberg. The court found that Lazio had illegally terminated the team's contract due to Gothberg's pregnancy. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has awarded Gothberg €69,000 in 2024 for terminating working relations with the 28-year-old following her pregnancy announcement. Maja Gottberg was the centerpiece of Lazio's squad for the 2023-24 clash, with a new deal in talks for 2024-25 but no final documents have been signed. Although the deal was never fully consummated, after Gothberg's pregnancy was discovered, she informed Lazio. Lazio said there was no deal due to Gothberg's signature. Gothenburg was scheduled to visit Rome for clinical trials and lead training. However, he did not travel due to medical reasons. Lazio said she withdrew her contract, citing her lack of travel and links with the Parma Calcio women's team. But the CAS found no credible evidence that Gothberg's agent had said she intended to conclude any kind of contract, and found the pregnancy to be subject to a control before it was announced. CAS confirmed the deal between Gothberg and Lazio. Lazio also found that the team's actions breached Gothberg's duty to protect personal information. "This case is not just about football; it's about an opportunity to be treated with dignity and respect at an important time in my life," Gothberg said. FIFPro, the global football players' association, insists on this right, saying "FIFA's pregnancy regulations are not just written on paper, they provide real protection for players".
