San Siro demolition to begin in 2031; Green flag for AC Milan-Inter new stadium project
- New joint stadium building planned for 2027 - New stadium expected to open in 2030–31; Then from 2031 the San Siro was largely demolished - Proposal to protect the outdoor iconic area as public space - Milan & Inter will continue to play matches at Michaud until the new stadium is ready
After years of uncertainty, the future of Milan's iconic San Siro stadium has become clear. As AC Milan and Inter move forward with plans to jointly build a new shared stadium in Milan, the current estimate is that demolition work will begin at the San Siro from 2031, when both teams relocate there.
According to current plans, construction of the new stadium will begin in 2027 on land next to the San Siro. After the new stadium opens for the 2030–31 season, most of the San Siro's seats and interior will be phased out once the system is fully operational.
Regardless of the rumors so far, AC Milan and Inter will continue to play their domestic matches at the San Siro until the new stadium is ready. The San Siro lags behind commercially compared to modern stadiums emerging in Europe; Both clubs are insisting on the need for a new stadium as the cost of renovating the old stadium is huge and the commercial margins are high.
The joint stadium project was first mooted in 2019. But political opposition, legacy concerns, and debate over whether to renovate the San Siro delayed it for years. The project has been accelerated by recent developments; Both clubs are now fully committed to the demolition-reconstruction project.
One thing to note is that the entire San Siro will not be demolished. Today's proposals include preserving specific parts of its iconic exterior structure and making it part of the public space surrounding the new stadium.
Current Term Outlook:
-
2027: Start of new stadium construction
-
2030–31: Expected opening of new stadium
-
From 2031: San Siro demolition works begin
To that end, fans will have a few more chances to see one of the world's most famous stadiums, the San Siro, in person over the next few seasons before it changes its face.
