There's always regrets about you - Rooney's career in management

Wayne Rooney's last managerial stint at Plymouth Argyle ends in 2024. Former Manchester United and England forward Wayne Rooney says he has regrets about his managerial career and has ruled out a return to management. Rooney was appointed manager of Derby County in 2021, but his tenure was marred by bank finance problems. He stepped down in 2022 after being relegated to League One. Later, he moved to DC in America. He was the manager of the unit for 15 months. Then, at Birmingham City, he was relegated on 83 days after losing 9 of 15 matches. His most recent stint at Plymouth Argyle saw 4 wins and 13 losses in 23 Championship matches, by mutual consent.

"There are always regrets," Rooney said. "It reflects what I've done. My biggest regret is the Birmingham City job, when I took over from John Eustace."

Rooney's Birmingham job is the first for US owners Shelby Companies Ltd in 2023. Eustace led Birmingham City to 6th place in 2023, but have slipped to 20th under Rooney.

"The place I'm at right now, my mental state — I can't be rehired in that," Rooney said. "However, I don't always close opportunities". If Rooney joins Manchester United as manager in 2023, he said it would be "probable". Rooney has now joined the BBC's pundits in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup.
