K League 1 Round 16 Preview: Jeonbuk–Gangkwan Key Clash; Gwangju aims to bounce back with changes; Focus on FC Seoul young star Son Jang-beom

K League 1 resumes this weekend after the World Cup break. Top four Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Gangwon FC headline the clash of the week in Round 16, which opens the second leg of the season. Meanwhile, Gwangju FC, who have strengthened themselves in the transfer window, are heading for relegation. Young centre-back Son Jong-beom continues to be a key tool for table-toppers FC Seoul.

Key clash of the week: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs Gangwon FC

After a month-long break, third-placed Jeonbuk (26 points) welcomes fourth-placed Gangwon (24). With only two points difference between the two teams, the result could create a reshuffle in the table.

Jeonbuk are unbeaten in their last six league matches (4 wins, 2 draws). After conceding two goals in a 2-2 draw against Pohang Steelers in Round 10, the defense solidified by conceding a total of just one goal in the next five matches. Up front, Brazilian Tiago Oroba has three goals in the last five games; Three points with a stoppage time winner over Gimcheon Sangmu in Round 15. But now he is not due to injury; To complement this, Jonbook have signed Gytis Paulauskas on loan from Jeju SK.

Gangwon's best streak (last five games unbeaten: 3 wins, 2 draws). They conceded just one goal in the last series. Lee Gi-hyuk, who was in the K League Best XI four times in May, is the lifeblood of the team with his control at the back and ability to structure play from the back. With the player of the month award and experience gained on the recent World Cup stage, he looks to give Gangwon a boost.

The first clash of the season ended 1-1. With both teams coming out strong in defence, the key is to finish the leading chances with deadly accuracy to decide the outcome. The second clash kicks off at 7.30pm on Saturday at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Team of the Week: Gwangju FC – Second Path Revival

Bottom of the table Gwangju FC (7 points) went into the break with a heavy 0-4 defeat against Incheon United in Round 15. An eight-match losing streak from Rounds 5 to 12 followed a win over the same Incheon in Round 2 in March; After that there was no success.

At halftime, the team quickly strengthened the lineup. In defence, they signed Brazilian central defender João Pedro. A central player by nature, he can also operate as a flanker, adding to his versatility.

In attack, Australia have included international frontman John Iredale. He was a dangerous winger last season with Seoul E-Land in K League 2 with 10 goals and one assist in 27 games. As Gwangju have scored just seven goals in 15 league games this season — the lowest tally in K League 1 — expect Iredale to breathe new life into the attack.

Both João Pedro and John Iredale did not qualify this weekend; They can only play after the additional registration window opens on Thursday, July 9. Gwangju will face Ulsan HD in Round 16. As Ulsan won 5-1 in the first clash of the season, the watch will be on whether Gwangju will show signs of improvement after the break. The match kicks off at 7.30pm on Sunday at the Gwangju World Cup Stadium.

Player of the Week: FC Seoul Young Rising — Son Jang-beom

Table-toppers FC Seoul (32 points) extended their winning streak with a 2-1 win over Daejeon Hana Citizen in Round 15. Chief among the reasons for their showing this season is 2007-born, academy product centre-back Son Jong-beom.

Having progressed through the Seoul U15, U18 ranks, he introduced himself in the first-team starting for the first time in the win over Incheon United on the opening day of the season. Relentless work, precise key passes, high pass completion rate, forward pace with the ball — these quickly made him a keystone in the centre.

Vulnerable in pursuit and attack, he ensures defense by falling back when centre-rower Lee Seung-mo gets up front; If space opens up, he moves forward and joins the attack. Providing balance and power as a defensive-attacking nexus, he has been one of the key factors in leading FC Seoul to the top of the table in his debut season.

Seoul will face Incheon United in the Round of 16. Seoul won the first match of the season 2-1. The second clash starts at 7.30pm on Sunday at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
